The Sol Senate Cycle – Future History

Introduction Concepts:

Future History is a Science Fiction/post-Apocalyptic/Dystopian series featuring tales from often-marginalized people. In concept, the series is similar to the great ‘Helliconia’ series by Brian W. Aldiss in the sense that it tracks events over a long period of time. Unlike the Helliconia series, all of the POV Characters are connected in obvious and not-so-obvious ways over centuries of time and around certain events. Actions and decisions in one century may only have consequences in another.

The series focus over the various volumes in the series is split between events on the planet Earth (Estuary Tales, Memestalk) and in the Solar System off-Earth (The Sphinx, The Folk and the Shellmen and Terraform Triptych), and all are further linked by an cyclical africanfuturism Ocean Tide motif rather than a linear Western-centered structure. Another motif ordering the work is different Seasons, which is analogous in many aspects to Daniel J. Levinson’s ‘The Seasons of a Man’s Life’ and adds another rich tapestry to the multi-POV characters and their circumstances, choices and goals over the time.

The series is ultimately hopeful, in how ordinary people’s lives may change after each environmental and cultural shock over the centuries that the series undertakes to examine. Stories that feature these POV characters in these new futures, living their lives. In many other aspects, these stories are as much about the possible futures as conceived by the author, as it is about people living within them.

All the decisions of these people transitioning through time and place -and beyond each crisis that currently threatens present humanity- is ultimately enabling. A history that a future historian may relate about our ‘now’ – the hindsight we didn’t know we needed!

Series Blurb:

Humanity has spread through the Solar System. They have fled a hostile Earth climate boiling with pathogens and massive climate change events that ran amok, starting in the 21st Century. The pitifully few survivors are barely above extinction levels in numbers… yet they persevere. These are the Tales of this time: a History of the Solar System and the people who live in their time. The Future History is the first section of the Sol Senate Cycle, focusing on the home star of Sol and the Planetary Senators over the next millennium of Human History
